Being a co-op at Jackson, Rolfes, Spurgeon & Co. is an amazing opportunity that allows accounting students to gain real world experience. You cannot learn everything about accounting by merely studying textbooks; it is important to do actual work in the field in order to fully grasp the concepts. JRS offers this opportunity to gain knowledge of real world applications.
JRS may be considered a smaller firm compared to other accounting firms, but that does not in any way take away from the experience you can gain while working here. Each co-op is exposed to many different aspects of the business and are given actual work to complete, not just copy jobs that exist at some of the larger firms. By completing projects, you are able to apply what has been taught in the classroom and will learn even more in the process. During the time spent at JRS, you have the opportunity to experience both tax work and audit work, which is a great advantage in ultimately deciding what field of accounting you want to work in upon graduation.
Here at JRS, the work environment is very encouraging. All employees, including the partners, are approachable and are always willing to help you with questions. They want to see you succeed and are willing to help in any way needed. The younger full-time employees are very welcoming and certainly help you get acquainted with the way business is conducted on a day-to-day basis. Overall, deciding to co-op at JRS is one of the best decisions an accounting major can make. The experience is unlike any other and you will learn so much about the profession with this hands-on experience.
